A starship is a spacecraft capable of travelling over interstellar distances. They are a common plot element in science fiction, since they eliminate the problem of planets and stars which are spread over vast distances.

Overview

The most familiar example is probably the warp-driven starships featured in the Star Trek franchise. These are considered capital ships, with sizes ranging from 100m (bow to stern) to approximately 600m for the most recent Sovereign class. Similar to modern Navy vessels, they carry both offensive and defensive systems. Their primary role, however, is to explore the uncharted worlds and systems inside and outside of the Federation.

Types of Starships

The concept of an interstellar vessel is not unique to Star Trek, however. Series like Stargate SG-1 and Battlestar Galactica have adopted the concept, along with numerous other science fiction series and films. The starship is a very useful plot device since it both serves as a method to confine characters in a specific location and/or a specific task or chain of command, while still remaining mobile as a unit, facilitating a different plot every episode for a series.
